Delightful, But Not Chocolate Enough (To Balance The Mint): Edy’s Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream!

The Good: Not entirely un-nutritious, Inexpensive, Tastes delightfully minty!
The Bad: The chocolate cookie in the ice cream is not chocolatey enough to truly sell one who loves chocolate mint.
The Basics: Edy’s Slow Churned Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream is minty and wonderful, but not a truly well-balanced flavor for those looking for all the promised elements.

When it comes to ice creams, the ends of summer and autumn are not reasons enough (to me) to stop enjoying and reviewing ice cream! It might be getting cold outside, but when the house is warm and I have a good book in front of me – or television I love – it’s still ice cream time. The latest one I have picked up is Edy’s Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream. Edy’s Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream is an ice cream that is more enjoyable on a visceral, emotional, level than on an objective one based on what the flavor is promised to be. As part of the Slow Churned line, it has ½ the fat and 1/3 the calories of most Edy’s ice creams and as a lover of mint, I enjoyed the Mint Cookie Crunch ice cream. But the chocolate cookie bits broken up in the ice cream are neither chocolatey, nor crunchy, enough to truly be sold on the flavor in objective terms.

As one who loves mint, Edy’s Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream is a very minty, but unimpressively chocolatey ice cream.

Basics

Edy’s ice cream comes in a one and a half quart cylindrical container. The Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream is a smooth ice cream broken up by random sized chocolate cookie bits. At (locally) $3.99 a 1.5 quart tub, this Edy’s ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream. This is a Slow Churned Edy’s ice cream, which has been an expanding line from Edy’s the last few years.

Ease Of Preparation

Edy’s Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream is a very basic ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream.

Taste

The Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream smells perfectly minty. The scent is a generic peppermint/spearmint aroma that is very aromatic, especially as the ice cream warms up. The scent is inviting and distinctive.

On the tongue, the Mint Cookie Crunch is minty and creamy; the cookie additive gets softer in the ice cream, so it ends up more like a brownie than a cookie. The chocolate cookie and the mint blend incredibly well so the flavor is very much like one would think of a mint cookies and cream. The cookie pieces in the Mint Cookie Crunch are not actually crunchy and the chocolate is not nearly as strong as a chocolate lover might want. Instead, this is a mint ice cream dominated by the flavor of mint, not the chocolate cookie.

The cool, refreshing flavor of the mint ice cream compliments the chocolate cookie broken up into the ice cream nicely. The Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream does not have a dry aftertaste, which is a rarity for an ice cream with cookie pieces in it!

Nutrition

The Edy’s Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream is a fairly light ice cream with a broken up cookie pieces swirled almost entirely uniformly through the ice cream. The one and a half quart container represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 120 calories, only 25 of which are from fat. The 2.5 grams of fat represent 4% of the RDA of fat, with 8% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 1.5 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 5 mg of cholesterol (that’s 2% of the RDA!) and 60 mg of Sodium (2% RDA). The only other real nutrient is three grams of protein, though there is also 6% of the RDA of Calcium and 4% of the RDA Vitamin A in the Mint Cookie Crunch Ice Cream.

Edy’s has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Non-fat Milk, sugar and corn syrup, Mint Cookie Crunch is a decent ice cream! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list.

Storage/Clean-Up

Edy’s ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of June 23, 2014).

The Mint Cookie Crunch ice cream is very light, opaque green color, and will certainly stain light clothing. When the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.

Overall

Edy’s Mint Cookie Crunch ice cream is good for the mint base ice cream, but it does not deliver as much flavor with the cookie pieces as one might hope. That makes it just a little less than it could be, despite being so healthy.
