The Good: Yummy, Reasonably priced, Nothing bad in it
The Bad: Not as robustly flavored ice cream as it could be.
The Basics: Dean’s Country Fresh Peppermint Stick Ice Cream is good, especially for one of the smaller dairies!
Right before my wife began her current change in diet, she did a calorie (or, more accurately, a carb) splurge night. For that, she picked out a few treats that I am now forced to finish. Chief among them is the ice cream she picked up, a half gallon of Dean’s Country Fresh Peppermint Stick ice cream. This appears to be a seasonal ice cream from Dean’s and, as a loved or mint ice cream, it is pretty enjoyable!
The Dean’s Country Fresh’s Peppermint Stick Ice Cream is a simple ice cream with a single additive: broken up pieces of peppermint candy canes.
Basics
Dean’s Country Fresh ice cream comes in a typical half gallon (actually 1.75 quarts) container. The Peppermint Stick Ice Cream is a mostly smooth ice cream: the basic ice cream has the occasional broken up piece of candy in it. It is a white ice cream with rainbow candy cane pieces broken up in it.
At (locally) $3.99 a half gallon, the Dean’s Country Fresh ice cream is an inexpensive ice cream that is more than just a basic ice cream.
Ease Of Preparation
The Peppermint Stick Ice Cream is an ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Peppermint Stick Ice Cream.
Taste
The Peppermint Stick ice cream smells exactly like peppermint, like one expects from a food filled with candy canes. Actually, as the ice cream warms up a little, it smells slightly fruity, which was entirely unexpected.
In the mouth, the Peppermint Stick is faintly minty on the ice cream front. In fact, this was more distinctly vanilla in its primary flavor than it was peppermint. As the tongue reaches one of the very minty candy cane pieces, the flavor appropriately explodes with mint. The next result is that this ice cream tastes, ultimately, like peppermint frosting.
Peppermint Stick ice cream surprisingly does not have any aftertaste.
Nutrition
The Dean’s Country Fresh Peppermint Stick Ice Cream is a fairly heavy ice cream with an intrusive additive (the candy cane pieces often get stuck in one’s teeth). The half gallon represents fourteen half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 150 calories, 70 of which are from fat. The eight grams of fat represent 12% of the RDA of fat, with 25% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 5 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 30 mg of cholesterol (that’s 10% of the RDA!) and 35 mg of Sodium (2% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 8% of the RDA of Calcium in the Peppermint Stick Ice Cream.
Dean’s Country Fresh Peppermint Stick has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Milkfat and nonfat milk, sugar, and corn syrup the Peppermint Stick is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list. The Peppermint Stick Dean’s Country Fresh ice cream is Kosher, but not gluten free. There are no allergy warnings on the package, save for soy ingredients.
Storage/Clean-Up
Dean’s Country Fresh ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of October 15, 2013).
The Peppermint Stick ice cream is fairly light frozen dairy dessert. However, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.
Overall
The Dean’s Country Fresh Peppermint Stick ice cream is good, but more subtle than it is audacious on the flavor front. Still, it is a wonderful inexpensive ice cream bound to satisfy most consumers.
