A Very Busy Ice Cream, Breyers Blasts! Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Is, Nevertheless, Fun!

The Good: Tastes good, Not entirely un-nutritious, Reasonably priced
The Bad: I am discovering more and more that I am not a huge fan of nuts in ice cream . . .
The Basics: The Breyers Blasts Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream is quite good until I get lured into biting into a frozen peanut in the chunks of Snickers!

In the interest of full disclosure right up front, I am not, traditionally, a fan of Snickers candy bars. In fact, I was surprised to look through my review lists and discover that I had reviewed the Snickers Dark candy bar (reviewed here!). However, as part of stocking up on ice creams for review, I found Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk in the Breyers Blasts! line and decided to see if an ice cream that utilized shattered Snickers bars did anything better for me. And, to a minor extent, it did.

The Breyers Blasts’s Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream is a simple ice cream with multiple additives, from a caramel swirl to cracked up pieces of Snickers candy bars.

Basics

Breyers Blasts ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream is a chunky ice cream: the basic ice cream mixed with caramel, Snickers candy bar pieces and (I am convinced) free-floating peanuts. Virtually every bite had caramel, a random peanut, or a chunk of chocolate bar in it.

At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Breyers Blasts! ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream.

Ease Of Preparation

The Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream is a loaded ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream.

Taste

The Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream smells like caramel and peanuts. The aroma is more from the caramel with a slight underscent of peanuts. The nutty scent accents the light, sweet caramel flavor.

In the mouth, the vanilla ice cream carries the flavor of the caramel perfectly. The caramel permeates the vanilla ice cream, even away from the swirls in the ice cream. The flavor is augmented by chunks of chocolate and Snickers candy bars, which do not initially change the taste significantly. Instead, it adds a crunchy texture that is actually very intriguing in the mouth. However, the peanuts from the Snickers that are in the Snickers pieces are actually surprisingly flavorful . They overwhelm the caramel flavoring that comes from the Snickers and the swirl in the ice cream. The chocolate bits begin to assert more of a flavor as the temperature rises, the sweet milk chocolate from the ice cream becomes more than just a texture in the vanilla and caramel flavored ice cream. The vanilla flavor also begins to assert itself more, which is a pleasant surprise.

The chocolate chunks, while prevalent throughout the ice cream never actually take over the overall flavor of the ice cream. This is a very caramel-flavored ice cream, regardless of the temperature.

Nutrition

The Breyers Blasts Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream makes a passing attempt at healthy by utilizing a light vanilla ice cream with heavy additives. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 150 calories, 45 of which are from fat. The five grams of fat represent 8% of the RDA of fat, with 15% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 3 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 10 mg of cholesterol (that’s 3% of the RDA!) and 75 mg of Sodium (3% RDA). The only other real nutrient is three grams of protein, though there is also 8% of the RDA of Calcium in the Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk Ice Cream.

Breyers Blasts has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Skim milk, corn syrup, Snickers pieces, the Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list.

Storage/Clean-Up

Breyers Blasts ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of November 13, 2013).

The Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk ice cream is fairly light, but the caramel swirl is sticky and will stain. As well, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.

Overall

The Breyers Blasts Snickers Caramel Swirl Chunk ice cream is good, but it did not rock my world. Instead, it satisfied my desire for ice cream, without truly impressing me.
