Pillsbury Makes A Seasonal Frosting We Wish Was Around All Year With Creamy Supreme Peppermint Frosting!

The Good: Tastes great, Very easy to use, No storage issues
The Bad: Limited availability, Nutrition.
The Basics: I try not to review a frosting and kvetch too much about how it is not terribly nutritious. With the Peppermint Creamy Supreme frosting, Pillsbury has a real seasonal winner!

With the holidays rapidly advancing upon us, my wife has been very busy baking and part of the joy I get this holiday season is helping out with the consuming! My wife has been busy baking, I have been very busy reviewing, it’s working out pretty well for us this holiday season! One of the new products she picked up that I have been considering as my waistline expands is Pillsbury’s Creamy Supreme frosting.

It ought to be noted that I love pretty much all things mint, so I was biased for the product doing into it on that front. However, because nutrition is an integral part of all of my food reviews and a frosting, pretty naturally, scores low on that front, my final numerical rating of the product might well seem deflated. So, up front, the bottom line is that this is one of the best frostings I have ever tried, homemade or store bought. Get it while you can!

Basics

Pillsbury Creamy Supreme Peppermint frosting is a premade frosting produced by Pillsbury. It is a seasonally-available frosting that is new for 2011. Released just prior to the 2011 Christmas holiday season, Creamy Supreme Peppermint is supposed to disappear from the market after December 25. So, get it now or risk missing out on it! This is hardly a flavor that is likely to remain around long enough to hit the clearance racks.

Pillsbury’s Peppermint frosting comes in the company’s standard 16 oz. plastic can. The Peppermint frosting is white and creamy and the container comes with an easy to snap on blue top that allows one to reseal the leftovers for a limited amount of time.

Ease Of Preparation

Creamy Supreme is a frosting, so there is not much needed in terms of preparation. Simply pop off the plastic cap, tear off the foil safety seal below that and consume! It is that simple.

Of course, most people use frosting as a component in baking as opposed to a sweet release for gluttony. For those who actually want to use this frosting to frost cookies or a cake, this is an exceptionally easy-to-use frosting. It spreads very easily and it does not get hard, even for five days after being applied to the baked goods you put it on!

Taste

Opening the container of Creamy Supreme Peppermint frosting, one is not bowled over with a strong peppermint aroma. Instead, this frosting smells lightly of peppermint, but strongly of vanilla. While that fact initially made me feel trepidation over trying some, that went away very quickly.

Placing the frosting on the tongue, the immediate taste sensation is of peppermint. While the aroma from the frosting in its container may be vanilla, there is nothing vanilla about this frosting’s flavor. Instead, there is a creamy, milky flavor that is enhanced by a peppermint chill. This is a very sweet frosting and has a lighter aftertaste to it than some frostings. The aftertaste is sugary and faintly minty.

Nutrition

Obviously, as a frosting, Pillsbury cannot do much about how unnutrious their frosting is. Given that the frosting is made largely of sugar, partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils and water, this was never going to be a nutritious product. There are various artificial colors and preservatives, so this is not an all-natural product.

It is also not the best product in the world for you on a nutrition front, though it is gluten free. A 2 Tbsp serving of Pillsbury’s Creamy Supreme Peppermint frosting has 140 calories, 50 of which are from fat. Those 5 grams of fat represent 8% of one’s RDA of tat. Unsurprisingly, one serving is 7% of your RDA of carbohydrates and there is no protein in this frosting. There are, however, 65 mg of sodium in the frosting. This is not a food to try to live off of.

Storage/Cleanup

Keep the frosting sealed and it will last for quite some time. The container we bought a week ago would have expired in March of 2013, had I not eaten it all up! This frosting remains supple and spreadable for quite some time, even if the leftovers have been refrigerated. However, the peppermint kick from this frosting lessens the longer it is out of its container.

As a product made mostly of sugar, the Creamy Supreme Peppermint frosting is very easy to clean up. Simply washing it off with hot water helps clean off anything this gets on.

Overall

A wonderful frosting, Pillsbury Creamy Supreme encourages bakers and consumers to buy it up and eat it up fast!
